ITA Computers has started shipping the Smartbook 7 from its website, 98dollarnetbook.com. The netbook has a VIA 8500, 300MHz CPU and 128MB of RAM, and comes with Windows CE 6.0, which begs the question – is this machine even usable without a miniature Linux distro?
ITA Computers has just launched a VIA-based, 7” netbook that costs $98. However, the company is charging $15 for shipping, which is quite a significant increase for its price bracket. The Smartbook 7 features a VIA 8500, 300MHz CPU; 128MB of RAM; a 7”, 800 x 480, TFT; a 2GB SSD; three USB 2.0 ports; an WLAN 802.11 a/b/g adapter; and Windows CE 6.0.This isn’t the first time the public has seen this netbook; Liliputing.com was informed that the OEM made the Delstar netbook, which was sold for $120 during Black Friday. Other similar Linux-based models have been around for some time, and some Windows CE models were sighted on eBay for less than a hundred dollars. The Smartbook 7 does have one redeeming feature though - its 1-year warranty.
